Frequently Asked Questions
Q. In an emergency, how is my information
accessed?
A. There are multiple identifiers
for our clients. Our patented “drivers license hood”,
which attaches to your driver’s license, identifies you as
a member. The 800 number is on that card. Emergency personnel call
that number and our call center operators begin the process. We
also have other identifiers such as identification cards, luggage
tags, and personalized stickers for your wallet, passport and other
belongings.
Q. How can I be assured that the information I am giving to Global
MedNet is kept confidential and secure?
A. Safeguarding your privacy
is our NUMBER ONE priority. That is why we do not provide Internet
access of your records to hospitals or other institutions. Our security
commitment is your assurance that we will do just that. Here’s
how we do it:
- The system is not accessible via the internet
- It is a stand alone system
- There is an off-site backup of the system
- All employees are subject to background
investigations
- All employees must sign confidentiality
agreements
- All incoming medical updates are received
in a secure area
Q. Why don’t you use the Internet? Isn’t that faster?
A. We don’t
use the Internet for a variety of reasons
- Privacy – we all know that some
systems can be accessed. Most people are still very cautious about
medical records or information being accessible over the Internet.
In fact, a recent national Gallup Survey found that the privacy
of personal health information is very important to 77% of Americans,
and 84% said they were very concerned or somewhat concerned that
personal information might be made available to others without
their consent.
As a result, only 7% of the respondents to the Gallup survey said
they are very willing to store or transmit personal health information
on the Internet, and only 8% felt a website could be trusted with
such information.
- Internet Accessibility – What happens
to your medical information if the emergency room can’t
get a connection? Even more importantly, most emergency rooms
have no Internet access. ALL hospitals have fax machines, and
if that fails Global MedNet provides the information LIVE over
the phone with the medical staff. Remember, our Call Center is
open 24 Hours Per Day / 365 Days per year.
- As the technology becomes more reliable
and confidentiality issues are addressed more thoroughly, we will
be prepared to have this information accessible via the Internet.
However, for now we feel that the public and hospitals are not
ready for this service via the Internet.
Q. How do I know that the information I gave is accurate
in MedNet database?
A. After we receive your
submitted information we place that information in our database.
We then mail a copy to you exactly as it appears in our system.
At that time you review the information for accuracy and either
keep a copy for your home files or report any changes back to us.
Q. Can I change and update my information?
A. 24 Hours- Per- Day, 365
Days- Per- Year, as often as you like. In fact, we will contact
you periodically (if you wish) to remind you to update. In addition,
this service is provided at no cost to you. We will also be sending
out a newsletter to our clients.
Q. If I travel outside the U.S., where English is not the
primary language and I need medical assistance, how do I know that
the people understand the information sent to them?
A. If you are outside the
U.S. and require emergency treatment, your information can be sent
via fax in both English and the language of that country.
Q. If I lose my wallet and credit cards outside the U.S.,
how will I be able to cancel my cards, as the 800 Numbers won’t
work? How will this be handled?
A. No problem. Call us collect
at Global MedNet and we’ll keep you on the line, make the
calls for you, and cancel your cards.
Q. How will I remember to update all my medical information,
prescription information, travel information and more?
A. No problem – We
send e-mails on a regular basis to any client that wants them. In
addition, the newsletter, while including important consumer information,
will include reminders.
Q. If I join Global MedNet through my employer, will they
have access to my personal medical information?
A. NO! The information you
provide Global MedNet is strictly confidential. You receive a welcome
kit with the enrollment information. You send that information directly
to us, not your employer. Global MedNet does not share this information
with anyone who isn’t authorized to see it.
Q. I have four children. Are all of them covered in your
family plan?
A. Yes, any member of your
immediate family is covered. For example, you, your spouse and any
child up to age 18, or up to 23 if a full-time student are covered.
Q. My children are away at college; can we send the college
copies of their medical profile with them?
A. Of course, include a copy
of their Global Med-Net enrollment number as well for their medical
personnel as well, in order to have fast access to their important
information.
Q. Is this a Section 125 Benefit, meaning can I pay for
this with pre-tax dollars via payroll deduction from my employer?
A. Yes, if your company offers
this as a benefit, the fee is reimbursable under a flexible spending
(FSA) or a nontaxable employee benefit.
